Due to the severe lack of underground connections South London communities rely heavily on buses as a means of transport. And despite their dangerous reputation night buses are equally important. Unlike north of the river, where "change at bank for the circle line" can be heard on just about every tube platform, south Londoners can reel off bus routes like there's no tomorrow. To highlight this we've looked at the different colloquialisms and nicknames of bus destinations that South Londoners refer to. There's a bit of alliteration thrown in too!
We found this beautiful upper case sans serif italic typeface, somewhat reminiscent of the Grotesk family.
As this typeface was not part of Camberwell's main collection, we had to work with limited characters, but came up with some nice possibilities for prints.
The letter Q in this typeface was particularly nice and we wanted to somehow integrate it into our work, but unfortunately we couldn't think of many places in South London with a Q in the name.
We also found a quirky typeface in a very large point size which would enable us to print bus route numbers the same height as three lines of text.
We first printed our 2 phrases in process black, 6 or 7 prints each.
Then the numbers were inked up in Pantone Magenta and Green.
The finished articles have been left out over the weekend to dry.
